International Students Advice
International students – are you thinking of studying in the UK for your undergraduate or postgraduate degree?
Have you decided where you want to be and what university has the best degree in your subject? What else do you need to consider when moving to the UK for study? Think about what might stand in your way?
Make a start with some useful first tips:
Thoroughly research your degree program and the university: have you chosen the right university for your studies; if yes, then:
– make sure you understand the entry requirements, program course structure and the length of time you will need to study
– make sure you familiarise yourself with the area of the UK where you intend to live
– have a good knowledge of the university’s location and the surrounding area
Is it all suitable? Does it meet your needs and expectations? Consider all your options by researching your needs thoroughly.
Once you have been accepted on to your chosen program course, you need to:
Apply for a Student Visa:
– check the UK government website for the latest visa requirements, application process and financial needs
– generally the UK requires international students to have a Tier 4 (General) student visa
Consider your financial planning:
– estimate your total expenses including tuition fees, accommodation, living costs, and travel
– ensure you have sufficient funds and consider opening a UK bank account
– arrange your accommodation before you arrive, either in student halls or through a private let; your university may also have UNIPOL places so research this
– international students may need health insurance
– if studying for more than six months students can access the National Health Service (NHS) but you will need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (HIS)
