Procrastination is rubbish!
Procrastinating makes you feel rubbish, yet at times we all do it. There’s so much to do and so little time, but all the brain will do is find excuses to prevent us from doing it.
- An assignment deadline getting too close for comfort? Oh, but first you must rearrange your books alphabetically, or by size or colour.
- Desperately need to revise for an exam? Yes, but first I must watch the last episode of something on Netflix.
Why do we do it? It’s not as though we enjoy the ‘filler’ activity. Do you really want to sort out the fridge? Put the spoons in size order? Wouldn’t we feel better if we just got on with it? Then comes the GUILT closely followed by the PANIC, but still we dither and find excuses.
Which one are you?
“I’m going to fail, I always do”
”No one told me what to do”
”It’s not easy when you have a real life to live”
”I failed because I chose to”
”I will only do it when I can make it perfect”
Deadlines are so controlling. I’ll fail if I want to”
How to stop doing it:
- Be brutally honest with yourself
- Stop feeling guilty
- Set up systems
- Change your self-talk
- Visualise yourself doing the task easily and quickly
- Use a timer
- Negotiate a reward for yourself after the task is complete
Remember: work smarter, not harder.
